The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation awards our Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals annually to recognize the greatest of achievements and contributions to our sport in Western Australia.
The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Gold Medal
Regarded as the highest of all honours in Western Australian Sailing, the Gold medallion is awarded to individuals based upon an Outstanding Life Time Contribution to the sport of sailing within Western Australia or an Outstanding Competitive Performance by a West Australian.
In 2019 a Gold Medal was awarded to Matt Wearn for his Outstanding Competitive Performance in the Laser Class, and we look forward to watching Matt represent all that we hope to achieve for Western Australia as he competes in the Tokyo Olympics. At the same time Gold Medals were awarded to both Chris Kelly and Chris Goldacre for the truly Outstanding Contribution that they made to our state in running the Westsail residential training camp for so many years.
In 2020 Gold Medals were awarded to Bill Steele for his lifetime of contribution to sailing, and to Cam Owen and Suzie Ghent for their outstanding performance in the Hobbie 16 Class. A full list of our past Gold Medal recipients can be found here.
The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Silver Medal (Youth Under 19)
The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Silver Medal has historically been awarded to the Youth Sailor (under 19) who has achieved the most significant competitive performance amongst all youth competitors in Western Australia.
In 2019 the Silver Medal was awarded to Zac Littlewood in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the Laser Radial Class and in 2020 to Michael Compton for his similar outstanding performance in the Laser Radial. A full list of past recipients can be found here.
From 2020 the Silver Medal criteria have been extended to include consideration of those young individuals who are making an Outstanding Contribution to Sailing in Western Australia in addition to those who may have achieved an Outstanding Competitive Performance. In this way the Silver Medal criteria will mirror that applied to the Gold Medal and will be awarded to a Youth sailor (will not attain 19 years of age by 31 December) who has made an Outstanding Contribution to the sport of sailing or an Outstanding Competitive Performance for their age in the preceding 12 months.
Nominations are sought for the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Silver Medal from Yacht Clubs and Class Associations.

Details of all competitive performances by the nominee over a specified period that might qualify for the Silver Medal on the basis of “Outstanding Competitive Performance”
The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Bronze Medal (Junior Under 16)
The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation Bronze Medal has historically been awarded to the Junior Sailor (under 16) who has achieved the most significant competitive performance amongst all Junior competitors in Western Australia. In 2019 the Bronze Medal was awarded to Michael Compton in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the Laser 4.7 Class and in 2020 to Harry Joyner for his remarkable achievements in the 29er Class. From 2020 the Bronze Medal criteria has been extended to include consideration of those young individuals who are making an outstanding contribution to Sailing in Western Australia in addition to those who may have achieved an Outstanding Competitive Performance. In this way the Bronze Medal criteria will mirror that applied to the Gold Medal within the Junior age range and will be awarded to a Junior sailor (will not attain 16 years of age by 31 December) who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of sailing or an outstanding competitive performance for their age in the preceding 12 months.

The Directors of the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation determine the most deserving recipients of the Medals from those individuals that have been nominated and will only award Medals where the achievements supporting the nomination meet the criteria of “Outstanding”
